SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Tuesday formally ordered that New Mexico will join the U.S. Climate Alliance, embracing the goals set by the 2015 Paris Agreement and aligning New Mexico with the U.S. governors and states that have committed to a climate-conscious future of protecting people, natural resources and cultural heritage.
In response, Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter Chair David Coss issued the following statement:
“Climate change is the greatest crisis facing humanity. If we don’t act urgently, climate disruption will negatively impact every other major issue we struggle with, including the economy, health care and racial and economic justice. Climate change threatens clean drinking water and food affordability for all of our children and grandchildren. I am so grateful that we now have a governor who understands that urgency and is acting accordingly.
“Gov. Lujan Grisham is coming out the gate with meaningful action to save our kids. She is backing serious safeguards to reduce not just carbon pollution but also methane, which should be heating our homes, not leaking and flaring from oil and gas wells.
“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change tells us we have only 12 years to significantly reduce greenhouse pollution before it’s too late to stop disastrous consequences of climate disruption. With a president intent on reversing critical safeguards, it is incumbent upon states to take action.
“This moment in history calls for bold leadership, and Gov. Lujan Grisham is providing that.
“We’ll be proudly working with this administration to keep New Mexicans’ drinking water clean and our climate safe for our kids.”
