The Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, founded in 1963, is a volunteer-led organization representing more than 7,000 members in New Mexico and West Texas. Our mission to is to explore, enjoy and protect the planet, and we prioritize action on protecting our climate, clean air, clean water, and conservation of wildlife and public lands in New Mexico and West Texas:
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is the biggest crisis facing humanity. It impacts almost all other issues that affect our lives, including health, safety and economy. That’s why the Sierra Club and the Rio Grande Chapter have made it our biggest priority. We focus on four key areas in our climate efforts: coal, energy policy, renewable energy, and zero waste. WATER
Water is our lifeblood, and the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter works vigilantly to keep the water we drink safe and clean. From making sure New Mexico’s massive dairies don’t contaminate groundwater with the millions of gallons of waste they produce daily to fighting for better mining rules to keeping the Gila River freeflowing to testing rivers and streams for contaminants, our Water Team stays very busy. LAND
The Rio Grande Chapter Public Lands Team is involved in numerous aspects of protecting public lands. We’ve celebrated several major victories in just the last few years. Our advocacy efforts focus mostly on federal lands under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management, but it can include state and local jurisdiction land as well. WILDLIFE
From the smallest beetle to the largest elk, wildlife belongs to everyone. It is regarding carnivores that the Sierra Club finds much that needs to change. New Mexico is allowing large carnivores like bears and cougars to be hunted to the extreme. Midsize carnivores like bobcats, foxes, badgers and ringtails can be killed without limit in brutal leghold traps and snares for no other reason than to profit from their pelts. Coyotes have no protections at all and are used as living targets in thrillkilling contests. And endangered wolves are struggling in our state. Learn More...Get Involved
