All three candidates endorsed by the Rio Grande Chapter in the June 7, 2019 Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District election were victorious.
Barbara Baca defeated incumbent Board Chairperson Glen Duggins in a race for the “at-large” seat, representing Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia and Socorro counties, by a vote of 1,838 to 1,384. Barbara’s win was driven by strong support in Bernalillo County.
Stephanie Russo Baca prevailed in a three-person race for the Valencia County seat. Stephanie received more votes than the other two candidates combined, garnering 460 votes to 418 for her opponents.
John Kelly was unopposed in his bid for reelection to the Bernalillo County seat.
This is an election where voting and volunteering by Sierra Club supporters can really make a difference, and did make a difference, since so few eligible voters actually cast a ballot. Congratulations to all the candidates, and a big THANK YOU to all of you who made the effort to vote in this important election.
