I grew up in the era when public lands, the great open spaces, and the wildlife that thrived on it, constituted our American identity. When, 40 years ago, I traveled around the world, the most noticeable difference between any European or Asian country and the US was access to land and the spirit it afforded us. Working to maintain these public lands as a sacred space for all species, not just Homo trashiens, is the my primary motivation joining the Sierra Club. Oh, and doing that work with other intelligent, engaged, strong, and committed leaders who share my values is pretty valuable, too.
